READ THIS: Charlie Dunn loved this song and his friends sang it at his funeral in 1993. Charlie was in his early 80's when he made my boots back in 1973. Jerry Jeff Walker's ode to Charlie is a classic tribute to custom bootmakers and aficionados.

I remember when Charlie was tracing my foot measurements and questioned me about the t-shirt and boots I was wearing. Before I could utter a word Charlie said, "Clarks beeswax desert treks--English". Aside from dress shoes I've only wore Clarks boots (I think he liked that). He was puzzled though by my explanation of the, 'Wishbone Ash' English band t-shirt. I told him I worked for Jerry Jeff Walker's record company . And Charlie just smiled and went on and on about Ol' Scamp Walker, his new best friend. Note: 'Buck' was the owner operator of the Capitol Saddlery (my boots cost $310 and Buck required a $150 cash deposit...such a deal). Looking back, I'm glad Henry Withers (MCA/Universal Music Group-Houston office) brought his camera to capture the moment on film.

If I was ever to own custom monogrammed cowboy boots in my lifetime, I was indeed fortunate to have them handcrafted by the legendary Charlie Dunn. As the story goes, it was this song, that inspired Lee Miller to make boots. Lee Miller came to Austin to apprentice for Charlie Dunn when his shop first opened, in 1977. Charlie taught Lee his way of making boots, including the secret of shop specialties, like interlaced monograms and mirror lettering. Lee and his wife Carlyn bought the shop in 1986, and have since carried on Charlie Dunn's work at Texas Traditions.

I managed to keep my Charlie Dunn boots in reasonably good shape over these past 35 years. And each time I had them re-furbished shoemakers and artisans alike would compliment me on the 'custom' boots--giving me opportunities to tell of the legendary bootmaker (always singing a few bars of the song).

As National Promotion Director for MCA/Universal Music Group, I worked on three albums for Ol' Scamp Walker: 'Jerry Jeff Walker' (1972, L.A. Freeway - Guy Clark, Her Good Lovin' Grace, Hill Country Rain, Charlie Dunn); 'Viva Terlingua' (1973, Desperados Waiting For The Train, Gettin'By, Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother - Ray Wylie Hubbard, London Homesick Blues - Gary P. Nunn); and 'Walker's Collectibles' (1974, Will There Be Any, My Old Man, Rock Me Roll Me - Gary P. Nunn).

I had the best local and regional promotion staff in the biz. We all loved Ol' Scamp Walker-- MCA/ Universal Music Group promotion managers Henry Withers, Don Wasley, and Bob Osborne did an extraordinary job of launching 'L.A. Freeway' on KLIF Dallas and KFRC San Francisco (RKO chain)...the entire staff pushed for that miraculous convergence of AM-Top Forty and FM-album oriented/ alternative radio stations. At the end of the day there were no gold record awards, but each year at the annual Thanksgiving MCA/Universal Music Group reunion at the Smoke House Restaurant in Burbank, CA -- the team reunites and among many tales...speak fondly of Ol' Scamp Walker.

Vega-Table, from the LP, SMile...

In 2004, Brian Wilson, made a surprise announcement that he was going to finish the mythical LP, SMiLE using his current touring band. He contacted Van Dyke Parks, and the duo re-recorded the album. SMiLE won the Grammy award for the Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the piece "Mrs O'Leary's Cow" (aka "Fire").

In 1966 Brian Wilson commissioned Van Dyke Parks to write lyrics for the Beach Boys' next LP, the ambitious but ill-fated SMiLE. Parks and Wilson collaborated on songs for the album. Members of the Beach Boys strongly opposed SMiLE, notably Mike Love who negatively called Parks' lyrics "Acid Alliteration". The combination of resistance from the group and their record company, and Wilson's growing mental health problems and spiraling drug use, led Parks to quit the project in early 1967. It was shelved a few months later. Several Wilson/Parks songs from the SMiLE sessions later appeared on the Beach Boys' replacement album Smiley Smile, including "Heroes and Villains" and "Wind Chimes." Other songs slated for SMiLE, including "Cabinessence" and "Surf's Up," were compiled by Carl Wilson and included on subsequent LPs.

Personal Footnote: As described in my posted video 'The Who' including photos of 'yours truly' and the drummer for the Who, the late Keith Moon; following the anniversary bash at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel -- later that evening, I met Brian Wilson in a party in Keith's suite (yep, Brian was donning a white bathrobe), along with Mick Jagger and my pal, the late Harry Nillson.The Dark Horse Records U.S. offices were located on the 'attrium -- lower level' of Warner Bros. Records, along with all the other 'custom record labels' including the Beachboys label, 'Brother Records' and famed Motown songwriter ('Heard It Through The Grapevine, 'Car Wash', etc.) and producer, Norman Whitfield's, Whitfield Records. Remarkably, Norman was quite outgoing and downright friendly--so I thought I'd ask him a few questions about his compositions, Motown experiences, etc. In any event, in turns out he mistook me for 'Brian Wilson' (I was bearded big and burly back then). Discoverying that, Norman abruptly stopped conversing with me--indeed such a pity...more later.

George penned, The Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll) in homage to FriarPark's history. Sir Frank had a twisted sense of humor and populated the expansive garden with whimsical architectural quotations on wood and stonework. The film opens with the mocking statuary of a friar holding a punctured skillet engraved,"Two Holy Friars" (featured in the original artwork of the album, Thirty-Three & 1/3). The baronet is also peering into a microscope (he was a member of the Royal Microscopical Society--UK):

Frank and I enjoyed writing songs together-- much of the time to his rhythmic tapping as we tossed verses around. Luckily, I've managed to track down 'the lost tapes': "Stormy Lady". I got a big kick out of how much Frank enjoyed playing the drums--I can still picture the 'groovin' expression' on his face as I sang reference vocals in the studio voice-booth (most times I would crack-up laughing).

I recall while sitting at the console doing the final 'analog' mix for"Stormy Lady", Frank asked if the drum level was to high; I interrupted the engineer and hollered, "Let--'er rip Crilly!". He was like a kid in a candy shop--playing with those knobs on the soundboard (old school). At the end of the day, we wrote and recorded purely for our own personal gratification. And damn the naysayers!

The late Frank Terry and I had our own country-rock (countrypolitan) ensemble -- the Morgan Crilly Band. Frank's real name was Terrence Francis Crilly and he was raised in a musical family; his cousins are songwriter and producers Paul Williams (We've Only Just Begun, Old Fashion Love Song) and Mentor Williams (Driftaway, Loving Arms).

Frank and I enjoyed writing songs together-- much of the time to his rhythmic tapping as we tossed verses around. We were so 'full of ourselves' back then--but we truly had the most fun imaginable. I loved how much Frank enjoyed playing the drums-- I can still picture his 'groovin' expression' through the glass barrier drumming away as I sang reference vocals in the studio voice-booth (most times I would crack-up laughing).

I've managed to go into the vault and retrieve several tunes we recorded; the travelogue ditty, 'Oh California' reflects the optimistic outlook we both shared for the future as country-rock stars. The very thought was big fun.

Frank passed away from colon cancer last June. Here's how TV writer/producer and major league baseball announcer Ken Levine (MASH, Frazier, Cheers, Wings...Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres) eulogized Frank on his web-site at http://kenlevine.blogspot.com/

As any musician knows, the difference between a good song and a great song is the drummer. Usually in the background, often times pounding away in relative obscurity, it's the drummer who provides the backbone to the song, as well as its vitality and spark. Frank Terry was the Ringo Starr, Hal Blaine, and Gene Krupa of Boss Radio 93/KHJ. Originally a drummer himself, Frank Terry, more than any other Bossjock (even Morgan & Steele) set the template for the Boss Radio format and was its most consistent performer.

He was the guy who broke in the other Bossjocks. He was the guy who worked every shift, often going months at a time without a day off. The beat had to go on and he was the drummer. There was no more versatile performer in radio. The two biggest rock stations in America in the mid 60's could not have sounded more different. KHJ Los Angeles was ultra streamlined, WABC New York was all bells and whistles (chimes actually) -- organized chaos. Only one disc jockey ever worked both formats. Frank Terry at KHJ and later at WABC's sister station and clone in San Francisco, KSFX. You just gave him the charts and he could play.

Later Frank moved into country radio at KNEW and KSAN in the Bay Area. He could bang on washboards as well as snares.

Wherever he went, two things were certain. He made every station he ever worked for sound the very best they ever did, and he dented every console, cart machine, and music stand in the studio with his drum sticks.

Radio has lost a giant. Terrence Francis Crilly. Better known as Frank Terry. For those of us who knew and loved him, he will always remain in our heart... beating and beating and beating.

Charlie taught Lee his way of making boots, including the secret of shop specialties, like interlaced monograms and mirror lettering. Lee and his wife Carlyn bought the shop in 1986, and have since carried on Charlie Dunn's work at Texas Traditions. I managed to keep my Charlie Dunn boots in reasonably good shape over these past 35 years. And each time I had them re-furbished shoemakers and artisans alike would compliment me on the 'custom' boots--giving me opportunities to tell of the legendary bootmaker (always singing a few bars of the song).

As National Promotion Director for MCA/Universal Music Group, I worked on three albums for Ol' Scamp Walker: 'Jerry Jeff Walker' (1972, L.A. Freeway - Guy Clark, Her Good Lovin' Grace, Hill Country Rain, Charlie Dunn); 'Viva Terlingua' (1973, Desperados Waiting For The Train, Gettin'By, Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother - Ray Wylie Hubbard, London Homesick Blues - Gary P. Nunn); and 'Walker's Collectibles' (1974, Will There Be Any, My Old Man, Rock Me Roll Me - Gary P. Nunn). I had the best local and regional promotion staff in the biz. We all loved Ol' Scamp Walker-- MCA/ Universal Music Group promotion managers Henry Withers, Don Wasley, and Bob Osborne did an extraordinary job of launching 'L.A. Freeway' on KLIF Dallas and KFRC San Francisco (RKO chain)...the entire staff pushed for that miraculous convergence of AM-Top Forty and FM-album oriented/ alternative radio stations. At the end of the day there were no gold record awards, but each year at the annual Thanksgiving MCA/Universal Music Group reunion at the Smoke House Restaurant in Burbank, CA -- the team reunites and among many tales...speak fondly of Ol' Scamp Walker.

Senators James Webb and Chuck Hagel’s, ‘Dwell Time Amendment’ died quietly yesterday, allowing Republicans to enjoy all the obstructionist benefits of a filibuster,without having to stand up and tell Americans and their fighting men and women in the military exactly what they were doing. The Senate vote was a crucial test of the war plan that Bush /Patraeus put forward last week. The outcome showed that the strong opposition to the war plan by Democrats and a few Republicans remained insufficient to overcome a powerful Republican minority in the Senate that has succeeded all year in staving off challenges to the war policy.

For now, the failed ‘Dwell Time Amendment’ proposal is the closest Democrats have come to bipartisan legislation that would force Bush to change his strategy. And with Republicans solidly behind the plan outlined by Bush /Petraeus, Democrats have retreated to a firm antiwar stance.

How convenient that 56-44 would be a losing vote for America's sons and daughters wearing the uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan. And they did it on national television. And America yawned, hit the snooze button, and slept in.

I began working with Neil when I ran the San Francisco office for MCA/Universal Music Group. Neil appeared regularly at the Circle Star Theatre in San Mateo. And they were the most sought after highly prized 'ticket-comps' I had in my promotion arsenal for use with the radio and press crowd.Truth be told, I probably generated more airplay and press in the Bay Area for other--more needy Universal recording artists by leveraging Neil Diamond concert tix. I truly miss those days.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, Neil was one the more successful rock music performers, scoring an extraordinary number of charted hits. I recall how distressed my mentors at Uni Records were (Russ Regan, Pat Pipilo, and Rick Frio) when Neil decided to leave the label and sign with Columbia Records/Sony Music. At the time, I believe there was quite a turf battle underway in the corporate suite--especially after the late Artie Mogul and his A&R staff headed by Don Shane, signed Andy Kim (Sugar Sugar) who had reinvented himself in the image of Neil Diamond with the mid-chart hit single, 'Rock Me Gently'.

In the end, Columbia Records won simply by making an offer Neil couldn't refuse.As critic William Ruhlmann once wrote: "Neil Diamond claims worldwide record sales of over 140 million copies, and he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbara Streisand." Neil's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from all musical genres.

I posted the 'Cherry Cherry' video as a reminder of how Neil has been continually passed over for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since his eligibility in 1989. And that is a damn shame.

More speculation about Senator Larry E. Craig’s future surfaced Tuesday as his office sought to clarify his intentions. "As he stated [Sept. 1], Senator Craig intends to resign on September 30th. However, he is fighting these charges, and should he be cleared before then, he may, and I emphasize may, not resign," his spokesman Dan Whiting said in a statement.

The question isn't ever going to be "Can he weasel out of the conviction and run?" The question is "Can he be elected in Idaho?" or, perhaps "Just how stupid and/or homophobic are the citizens of Idaho?"

Hopefully he will not resign. The GOP isn't humiliated enough yet; another few months of Crazy Craig dithering and fulminating and trying himself in the court of public opinion will help bring more of the deserved shame on this pathetic, shrinking, time-passed-by minority party. This is a tribute to former Beatle, the late George Harrison. The montage goes back to Dennis' and George's tenure at A&M Records and Warner Bros. Records. Some of the highlights include photos of former Warner Bros. Chairman, Mo Ostin along with George and Dennis on their way to the State Department for a visit with Henry Kissinger (who couldn't quite grasp who George was and the purpose of the meeting...although he vaguely recollected that one of the band members had a Japanese wife). Rolling Stone Magazine writer, Charles Young and Dennis had to leave the meeting due to uncontrollable laughter (more later). Other photos include a gold record award ceremony featuring George, Olivia, Mo, Dennis, Dark Horse staffer's Linda Arias, Muriel Houseman, and the executive team at Warner Bros. Records: Dave Urso, Don MacGregor, Ed Thrasher, Eddie Rosenblatt, Stan Cornyn, Tom Ruffino, Russ Thyret, Lou Dennis, Clyde Bakemo, Ron Goldstein, Adam Somers, Mark Maitland, Carole Hart, and many others. The montage is dedicated in memoriam to Dennis' late wife, Lydia who was a paralegal at the law firm that represented George Harrison. She also worked with Ron Saul at Warner Bros. Records managing the Phil Spector label, PS Records, and was a national promotion staffer at Universal Music Group. George was best man at their wedding (Olivia a bridesmaid). Lydia, Dennis, George and Olivia are pictured in the montage funning it up with a mariachi band while attending the Warner national conference in Acapulco.

A tribute to the late, Frank Terry, one of the last superstar radio deejays (Boss Radio-- 93KHJ, 610KFRC; KSFX; KNEW). With the career explosion of Elton John, Dennis Morgan was recruited away from his position as National Promotion Director for MCA/ Universal Music Group by Elton's management firm, John Reid Enterprises (to take-over operations of fledgling,The Rocket Record Company).

Morgan's archives are filled with extra-ordinary accounts of The Rocket Record Company years; However, Rocket Records recording artists Kiki Dee, Neil Sedaka, Brenda Russel, and Elton's drummer and vocalist Nigel Olsson are among his favorites (good friends).

Along the way, there are many folks responsible for the success of Elton, and The Rocket Record Company. Among other things, Morgan attributes that fabulous success to deejays like the late Frank Terry (..."who helped propel our record sales via spinning our tunes over the airwaves...").

Dennis Morgan and Frank Terry were songwriting partners, and truly believed (in 1970) they were on the cusp of creating a sound called, 'countrypolitan' (ala Pure Prairie League).
